Mission:
Horizons for Youth supports students from low-resource communities, of all academic abilities K-College in pursuit of postsecondary success. We support students and their families through a comprehensive and holistic approach, addressing academic and social emotional needs: • Horizons for Youth has one-on-one mentoring. We thoughtfully match students with mentors based on personality and shared interest. • We provide one-on-one tutoring in all subjects, from basic reading through AP Calculus and economics. • Our students, along with their mentors participate in monthly enrichment outings that consists of cultural events, professional development, high school and college preparation, college visits and community service. This provides our students the chance to engage and experience their city and communities in ways they might not get to do on their own. • We conduct parent workshops, providing support for parents in dealing with some of the difficult issues that can impact their child’s education. • Many of our students are overcoming various levels of trauma that can affect their education. To address that, we offer individual and family counseling. • Lastly, because we work with students of all academic abilities, we support families navigating the process to receive special education services as well as psychoeducational evaluations to understand how to best serve their diverse learning needs. This portfolio of services ensure that we are not just providing academic support, but also the wraparound services needed for each student’s academic success. Our results speak for themselves. While only 9% of our students’ socioeconomic peers have graduated from college, 86% of Horizons for Youth High School Program graduates have either completed college or are currently enrolled and on track to graduate – a nearly tenfold increase.
